Reception for Here & There

On Wednesday, January 11, 2012 we were delighted to host a community celebration honouring the completion of a 2 year process that resulted in the community public art project, Here & There. Pictured here is John Thomas (L) and Walter Schultz (R) who were both instrumental in getting the original and current centres constructed. In the case of John Thomas, it was his father, Stan Thomas- then president of the Sunset Memorial Centre who led a campaign to raise the necessary funding to build the original centre. Walter Schultz, community member and past president of the current Sunset Community Centre engaged politicians on a municipal, provincial and federal level to gain the necessary funding to get this centre built. Both of these stories were captured by digital storyteller Lisa Nielsen that now reside on a flatscreen embedded into the heritage wall you see behind Mr. Thomas and Mr. Schultz

Arts Grows Community Something Collective

Something Collective hosted an open studio session in The Incubator on Sunday, Nov 20, opening the doors to community members and like minded artists to share and discuss arts engagement with the Sunset Community. Something Collective artist, Juliana Bedoya created this text based piece out of moss on the concrete foundation at the art centre- one of the many guiding principles that inform their practice.

The South Vancouver Community Space Inventory website is launched!

This website provides residents and organizations in South Vancouver access to available community spaces. These businesses, organizations and locations have generously shared their available rooms, spaces and facilities for use. Developed through the Sunset Community Literacy Plan, one of its goals is "to identify and enhance ways for residents and service providers to have access to community spaces". The inventory highlights currently available spaces and also finds new unknown spaces. It is our aim that residents and service providers will have improved access to community space. Faces of our Community was created in 2008 with community members in the Sunset neighbourhood. The majority of these mosaics are embedded into the sidewalk on Fraser Street. Moberly ws fortunate to have this one land on the exterior wall, marking this process of community collaboration.

The Incubator, Something Collective and Brief Encounters

Brief Encounters is a multidisciplinary performance experiment designed to fuse disciplines and push artistic boundaries. Brief Encounters was created by The Tomorrow Collective in 2005, and was produced by Katy Harris-McLeod and Mara Branscombe. Brief Encounter 17 is being co-produced with Something Collective member Laura Baron. For each installment the producers pick twelve inspiring artists/creators and match them in 6 unusual pairings. Two weeks prior to the show dates the artists are allowed meet with their partner and begin working. From this point on, the only criteria is that the piece be a new collaborative effort.
For this installment of Brief Encounters, Something Collective puppeteer, Maggie Winston is paired up with Contemporary Dancer, Julia Carr. These two inspired artist have been rehearsing at the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre.

Cultivating Connection: T Party!

As a wrap up for the artist residency of Cultivating Connections we celebrated with a Tea party on Monday, July 25. The Legion of Flying Monkeys added a festive air to the celebration with muscial interludes, Madame BeeSpeaker led community members on tours of the garden and a workshop on infused honey recipes, while Sharon Kallis prepared and served mint, lemon blam & lavendar teas- harvested from the Moberly Herb Garden. Kim and Manpreet our stellar camp leaders have provided the campers with a delightful program to compliment the spirit of summer camp- fun and games! They made cakes , competed for prizes, paper mache was a hit as was the numerous field trips to Stanley Park, Granville Island and Queen E. Park. Thanks to Kim and Manpreet for thier continual enthusiasm, creativity and imagination.

We have had the good fortune to parnter with the Stanley Park Ecology Centre as part of Something Green. Eco-educator, Anita Gregory led children on a bird house making workshop at Moberly, as well as hosted filed trips in the form of a low tide walk & forest walk in Stanley Park. The children learnt about bird, animal and ocean critter habitats.

Lori Weidenhammer, AKA Madame Beespeaker, visited with the materials and insturctions for campers to make a healing herb drying rack. The children visited the herb garden with Lori and learnt about the diversity represented in the herbs and their healing properties. They harvested their favorite herbs from the garden along with notes of their healing characteristics. Tying and balancing the twigs was a crucial part of the construction. Once that was done, campers arranges the herbs on the rack and labeled with classic tags. At the end of the day, I overheard one of the 6 year olds letting theri parent know that 'in the the old days the wooly lambs ear was used as a band aide.'

David will return to Moberly on Monday July 25 for the T-party that winds up the Cultivating Connections artist residency.

Campers enjoyed exploring the instruments, the sounds they make and the method of construction.

David Gowman visited the camp on Friday sharing his vast knowledge in playing music and instumentmaking out of green waste.

Something Green: gardening with Aimee Taylor

Campers learnt about seed planting and guidelines on caring for them. The seedlings will be tended by the campers throughout the week and some will be taken down to GROW at Creekside Community in late August. GROW is an art & urban agricultural project-check it out!

The children met Horticultural Therapist, Aimee Taylor this week. Aimee began this planting and growing workhop with a guided tour of the herb garden. Children explored with their senses.

This summer at Moberly we have campers from ages 6-12 participating in an eco-art camp called Something Green: art, nature & you. This project was inspired by the Cultural Herb Garden and many green iniaitives being offered this summer throughout the city of Vancouver. We began the camp with Lee Fraser a hip hop dancer who had all 20 campers hip-hopping for 2 continuous hours. What a start to our 4 week session!

Vancouver Stories

As part of the City’s 125 celebrations, the Vancouver Park Board has selected a team of digital media artists to work within the Vancouver community to capture the oral histories and memories of local residents. These digital stories will mark history and create a legacy of our diverse communities!

Be part of this unique project and share your story.

Digital Storytelling is the use accessible digital tools to let everyday people tell their own personal stories. Digital Stories are: simple videos that use recorded voice (in first person narrative), short in length (for this project approx 1-3 minutes) and illustrated with photographs, animation and limited live action. Some stories also incorporate sound and music.

Vancouver Stories artist/filmmaker Lisa g Nielsen and her team: Brian Lye, Suzanne Ahearne, Odessa Shuquaya and Lisa Walker will be collecting stories from May until September 2011. The team will work out of (but not be limited geographically by) 3 community centres: Britannia, Sunset and West Point Grey.
These collected digital stories will be will be archived on a website as well as amalgamated onto a DVD.
Every storyteller will receive a copy of the DVD!
The completed stories will be shared on large TV screens in the Community Centre’s living rooms and in Celebration Screenings across the city. This project will enable community members to see themselves reflected in their own personal digital imaginings.

This week we finished the install of the project Here & There. This year long project has artist Pat Beaton and intern artist Zee Kesler working with Sunset community members to represent the past and present of this neighbourhood. The project is installed in an are where 2 other community engaged art pieces located. The whimsical face piece was facilitated by artist Elizabeth mackenzie during the summer fine arts camp Creative remix. While the mapping piece, Community Texture, hung in the window was faciltated by artist Barbara Meneley. We are delighted with the connection between the 3 diverse projects.

Remarkable Women: Honouring Women from Our Vancouver Communities

Moberly hosted a workshop Remarkable Women: Honouring Women from Our Vancouver Communities, brought to us by Arts & Culture, Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation. This annual event celebrates and recognizes the contribution of remarkable women in our community and International Women's Day.

One of the iniaitives that leads up to International Women's Day is a series of workshops for community members to create their own poster celebrating significant women in their own lives. We had the pleasure of working with a group of grade 7 girls from Moberly School who not only created a poster, but had the good fortune of a visit from one of this years Remarkable Women, Poonam Sandu. Poonam generously spent time with us and shared the story about how she and her sister created a significant contribution to the stewardship of Vancouver through a recycle program at large special events:

Vancouver sisters Preet Bal and Poonam Sandhu have been knee deep in recyclable containers for the last three years. In 2008, the pair started a pilot project to divert waste generated from the annual Vaisakhi parades in Vancouver and Surrey. These parades, which are attended by up to 100,000 people, are well known for the free food that is distributed, including bottled water, juice and pop. Due to the sheer size of the event and lack of appropriate receptacles, historically many recyclables were discarded into garbage bags.

In 2008, with a dozen blue bins and less than a dozen volunteers in tow, Preet and Poonam set up recycling stations along small sections of the parade route. Each recycling bin was staffed by a volunteer, highlighted with bilingual signage (English and Punjabi), and monitored closely to prevent contamination. The bin started as a foreign entity, but quickly became a welcome addition, saving 200 containers per hour from going to the landfill. Subsequent years have seen the pilot project successfully grow with the support of the City of Vancouver, City of Surrey,
Metro Vancouver, the respective temples hosting the parades, and an increasing force of green-minded volunteers and citizens.

Khac Chi Bamboo Music

A partnership with the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra had Khac Chi Bamboo Music perform for 90 school children from Trudeau Elementary this month. Khac Chi Bamboo Music is 2 person ensemble with Chi Khac and Bic Ngoc who are incredibly talented Vietnamese musicians that have won the hearts of audiences in 24 countries all over the globe. Showcasing rare and unique musical instruments made out of bamboo, Khac Chi performed the haunting melodies of Dan Bau, a one-string zither from northern Vietnam, the Koni which has resonation chamber is a player's mouth, taking all of us on an adventure in sound.

Here is an example of an Echinecea Plant from the Herb Garden, that a grade one student drew in the contour drawing workshop. The artist projected the drawing onto the 24" x 24" birch plywood, then painted the image in the colour palette of Here & There.

Echinecea is a healing herb where, the powdered root is used to stimulate the immune system.

In late September, grade one students from Moberly school planted the winter garlic for the Cultural Herb garden. They learnt what a flavorable bulb it is when they made garlic bread and ate it all up for snack time. We also led them on a contour drawing workshop of the botanical leaves from the Moberly garden. These images would then be utilized in the Here and There project as a reference to the creation of the new herb garden.

Public Art Comes to Sunset

Hold that Thought is neon art piece created by Toronto multimedia artist Kelly Mark. Several of the letters are programmed to fail or sputter (flicker on and off) at random intervals. . This sign asks us to stop, slow down our minds, think and to "hold the thought" even if for only a moment out of our busy day. The temporal nature of this fleeting moment becomes a unique and personal experience for each viewer.

Canada Day at Sunset

July 1 has many communities celebrating Canada Day. This year at the Sunset Community Centre, we marked this day with a garden project for the newly opened Pre-School playground. Young people create these picket garden stakes, for the playground garden. Led by the artist Lori Weidenhammer and inspired by nature, children painted bees, butterflies and fleurs to adorn this new playground amenity.

Historical Signs with artist Margaret Naylor

In celebration of the South Hill 100th birthday, Grade 5 students from Moberly Elementary worked with artist, Margaret Naylor to create street signs, honoring the original street names in our South Hill community.
Students found out that South Vancouver was developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s as more European and Asian settlers came to this area looking for a place to live. The area was inhabited by First Nations people for centuries before that. The also learned that “until 1910 when the more” modern” method of numbering street was adopted, most of South Vancouver’s street were named after local property owners – especially if these landholders were prominent men.” As well, “Many of South Vancouver’s streets, initially only a block or two long, were named after other, less prominent local residents. The shift to numbered avenues was vigorously protested by some, including Walter Moberly. In August 1910, in an interview with the South Vancouver Star newspaper, he commented on the “absurdity of this prevalent epidemic to change the names of streets”

Students first created many images that represented the past, inspired by archive photographs.
They were introduced to calligraphy as a form of lettering and developed the name of the street in that inspired manner.

Silk Road comes to Moberly

Moberly hosted an educational concert with Silk Road for two local school groups- Trudeau Elementary and Moberly Elementary. Thanks to an arts partnership with Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO) http://www.vi-co.org/ Silk Road took us around the world through a series of unusal instruments and songs.

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra is unique in the world, and uniquely Canadian. It is one of the first concert orchestras in existence that bring together musicians trained in a wide variety of cultural disciplines, to perform new inter-cultural works on a grand scale. In the VICO, violins and flutes rub shoulders with the shakuhachi, the erhu and the sitar.and fertile ground is created for cross-cultural teamwork between classical, jazz and world music artists.

Here and There – a community art project!

In conjunction with the Vancouver Draw Down, Sunset Community centre will host a free mapping workshop that features the community art project Here and There.

We will be drawing maps of the neighbourhood, maps of imagination, maps of flight and fancy. Maps can describe a neighbourhood, its history, its people and the imagination of the map’s maker.

A map gives clues and direction and can let the reader understand a little bit about how the map maker experiences life. What do you see and hear as you travel the neighbourhood? What did you see on our way into Sunset Community Centre? What would you like to add to a community map? What would you like everyone to know about your neighbourhood? Where are the hidden treasures?

Come join Pat Beaton and Zee Kesler as we begin to trace the places of our neighbourhood.

Gardening Workshops

Aimee provided workshops for seniors, families and the general public. Community members learnt about making pots, planting seeds, germination and gardening tips.

Dr. Aimee Taylor provided gardening programs at both Sunset Community Centre and The Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre this spring. Aimee is a registered Horticultural Therapist HTR and Soil Scientist PhD. She has worked on therapeutic horticulture programs with seniors, disabled adults and children.

Call for Community Arts Internship for the Artists in Communities program, Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation.

Currently there are two positions available for emerging artists to work with established artists in a community art residence project at a community centre. The successful applicant will be selected by the more senior artist(s) and other members of the project.

These internships are based on the proposition that the emerging artists will gain knowledge, experience and contacts. The emerging artist will contribute to the success of the project working under the guidance and direction of the more senior artist(s) selected for the residency.

The Artists in Communities Program is a partnership funded by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and Community Centre Associations. The residencies are based on artists and members of a community coming together to create work around a common interest or concern. While creativity, experience and knowledge is recognized in all participants, the artist’s role is unique in that they are responsible for ensuring meaningful and respectful processes and aesthetic outcomes. Ephemeral Tea Party

Participants extended their investigation onto the floor generating larger scaled, collaboartive pieces. Intergenerational hands creating, side by side. Seniors from our community and a grade 4 class from Moberly Elementary were brought together to particiapte in an ephemeral tea party this fall. Utilizing natural materials from nature, artists Lori Weidenhammer and Sharon Kallis guided the participants to create elaborate desidngs concentrating on colour, form and texture.

Shadow Puppet Workshop

Participants learnt about the history of shadow puppets, how to make a shadow puppet and how shadows can be utilized in a theatrical production.

Puppeteer, Maggie Winston from Lost & Found Puppet Co. lead 3 workshops with Seniors and young people from the Sunset Community Neighbourhood.

Since 1999, the Ghost Train has become an annual tradition for thousands of families craving thrills and excitement. Don't worry, though—even as you venture through the Mouth of Hell and travel to the Underworld, you'll be out of harm's way in the safety of the Ghost Train...trust us! Mwahahahahahaha!
This year Mortal Coil offered free Shadow puppet workshops in community centres as a way to encourage participation, enhance understanding of puppetry and to enlargen community enagagement with this festival.

Langara Community College students in the Arts & Heritage class attended a workshop called Botanical Investigations at Moberly. This experiental method of learning provided students the opportunity to engage directly with the process of artmaking. The Community Arts Programmer at Moberly teaches this class at Langara College and felt that in the participation students would gain a greater understanding and appreciation for aspects to consider when developing and offering high quality arts based workshops in the recreation field.

In a groundbreaking project developed by MISCELLANEOUS Productions (creators of e-race, What You Carry With You, THE REENA PROJECT: Outcasts & Angels and Stock Characters: The Cooking Show), a group of culturally diverse, multi-barriered youth are collaborating with a team of professional artists on POWER: an evening of solo, duo and trio performance pieces, ensemble drumming and dance numbers, all of which take a raw, honest look at the things that matter to youth in the community: power, racism, immigration, poverty, violence, sexism, addiction and love.

Building on workshops and outreach initiatives conducted through 2008, a casting call in January 2009 and another in July 2009 drew youth from local high schools, community centres and youth-serving organizations. Since January, under the guidance of Director/Writer Elaine Carol and other professional artists, the youth performers have had intensive training in interdisciplinary performance art, solo performance, theatrical monologue, stand-up comedy, Slam poetry, ritual performance, World music, hip hop music and dance.

Creative ReMix Margaret Naylor

Working with the theme of nature Artist, Margaret Naylor introduced the children to printmaking techniques. They began with a visit to Van Dusen gardens with the intent of looking at diverse shapes, sizes and colors of leaves. Inspired from this visit and the resources the artist provided, they created imagery first by drawing, then cutting, creating a printing block which enabled them to ‘pull a print’. Finally, they embellished their work with collage and descriptive words. They were introduced to block printing, Styrofoam line printing and lino cuts.

She introduced the participants to dance in ways that you may not consider such as utilizing chairs as props for creating a choreographed piece. The installation of the portraits onto the walls at MACC.

Creating Creatures was a collective drawing process that had participants begin by drawing a single line with the inkwash. After these dried, they each chose one of the line drawings which they did not create and embellished it further with permanent fine markers resulting in a creature. Each drawing circulated amongst a number of participants having each add to the creation of the final piece.

Artist, Elizabeth Mackenzie provided a brush and ink workshop introducing camp participants to a number of techniques. These strategies encouraged exploration of indelible ink on rice paper, newsprint and cardstock. She focused the workshop on the subject of line, circles, faces and creatures. This artist is very interested in how participants become engaged in the process of making and creating often resulting in a large accumulation of work produced in her workshop/classes. The accumulation of the faces were installed onto the walls at the Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre, animating the space in a whimsical manner.

Koyali Burman visited Creative Remix offering a workshop in Kathak, a classical Indian Dance. This dance form traces its origins to the the nomadic bards of ancient northern India, known as Kathaks, or story tellers. These young people learnt how to use hand movement, facial gestures and footwork to create narratives.

Madame BeeSpeaker led the children in an ecological discusion culminating in the creation of a large spiral under the elm tree in Moberly Park. Madame BeeSpeaker is interested in drawing the children's attention to beauty and the rediscovery of the immediate natural beauty found in the urban environment that we often take for granted.

Working with natural materials with a focus on pattern, color, and texture captured these young peoples imagination and enthusiasim. Their engagment with the process allowed them the opportunity to create, all of which Madame BeeSpeaker capture through photography.

Artist, Madame BeeSpeaker (Lori Weidenhammaer) visited Creative ReMix and led the children an ephemeral art workshop. She introdued the children to the concept of making art with natural materials from nature. Madame BeeSpeaker began by choswing the children the beautiful color palatte of the natural materials they would be working with. She brought in a diverse variety of flower petals, multiple shaped leaves and curious seed pods where the children worked with color, texture and pattern to create these aesthetic images. Here you can see the young peoples' sensitive use of the delicate colors of the materials.

Creative ReMix is a month long fine arts camp hosted by MACC in partnership with South Asian Family Associaton. Over the course of 4 weeks professional artists have provided stimulating and engaging arts-based workshops for 7-12 year olds.

Yuklaana (Anastasia Hendry) was our first visiting artist who led and shared a First Nations cultural practice of making Button Blankets and Deer Skin Pouches. Anastasia guided these 7-12 year olds on a two day process whereby they became more familiar with traditions of the Haida through the making of these button blankets, the stories she told and the objects she shared with them.
Young people were engaged in a detailed process that included learning how traditional shapes are utilized in First Nations culture to generate animal images, to cutting and sewing felt fabric and adorning with buttons.

The children learnt about First Nations games by playing them together. Anastasia pointed out how the game TROUBLE was fashioned after a First Nations stone circle game.

They worked alongside the artist to create deer skin pouches, decorating them with colour beads, reminicent of a cultural trading practice many years ago.

Canada Day Chalk Mural: Mapping Canada

Mapping Canada
On July 1, communities across the country host organized celebrations for Canada’s Birthday that include; parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues,fireworks and free musical concerts, just to name a few. The annual Canada day at Sunset Community Centre event brings together hundreds of Sunset community members of South Vancouver, to celebrate together through games, food and fun. This year, we engaged community members in creating an intergeneration collaborative art piece called: Mapping Canada.

Mapping Canada had local artist, Shary Bartlett lead and guide community participants in creating a super-sized chalk mural on the paved parking lot of the Sunset Community Centre. This mural was based on the map of Canada, the provincial flags, flowers and animals. Participants worked from images and resources to fill in the map as well as symbolic representation of their personal experiences in BC and trips across Canada. As with all Community Cultural Development projects, the goal was to deepen connections with each other by recognizing community members through a collective contribution in a shared art-making process.

1. A LITERACY PLAN is being developed for Sunset.

They have prepared a fantastic slide show of creative public art projects that will start you dreaming about the intriguing art-filled neighbourhood centre that Fraser Street could become. Participants will enjoy a feast of visual and performing arts activities along side out trips to a range of local destinations. The main ingredients of visual arts, dance and music will engage young peoples imagination in exploring art making and traditional cultural practices taught by professional artists including, Northwest Coast Haida Artist Skaan Jaada, contemporary dancer Desiree Dunbar, visual artist Margaret Naylor and Koyali Burman a Indian Folk & Classical Dancer just to name a few.
In addition, youth camp leaders will provide a breadth of physical play based activities as well as supervise the twice weekly, out trips.

The 4 week camp will culminate in a community celebration on Friday, Aug 28, 1:00-2:30 PM in the main hall at Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre. This celebration will include an art-exhibition and performance by participants for family and community members. Light refreshments will be served.

Mosaic Clay and Glass Project at Moberly

Over the last year Fraser Street received a series of street improvements such as bus bulges, corner bulges and street trees. As part of these public realm improvements six, 4 feet by 4 feet, squares were constructed specifically for the installation of sidewalk mosaics at 43rd, 45th, and 47th Avenues. As part of the ongoing beautification and revitalization of the South Hill business district, the Sunset Mosaics Committee in partnership with Moberly Arts & Cultural Center and Sunset Community Center have conducted community art workshops creating and installing these sidewalk mosaics.

The aim of the Stanley Park Environmental Art Projects is to create environmental art that values the nature of the park. These projects are not meant to be permanent. In fact, the intention is for each created art piece to interact with the elements, eventaully returning to the park's ecosystem. The natural material used for COZY are limbs that were ripped from the trees during the storm. The artist had the limbs sliced into 'cookies' that when sewn together, become the fabric of the COZY. Participants were asked to consider their relationship with nature and represent that by 'burning' an image or text into the wooden cookie. They worked with burning tools in order to accomplish this. As the workshops generate the 100's of cookies the artist is stitching them together with hemp. Once installed, the elements will work their magic, including the small rodents who will intermingle and particiapted in the disintegration of the art work which will eventually, feed the ecosystem.

COZY The Stanley Park Environmental Art Project

Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre (MACC Studio Theatre) utilizes a variety of approcahes in fullfilling its mandate. Some programs and projects engage the local neighbourhood community and some attract communities of interest from across the city. The centre establishes relationships with individual artists and arts groups from a variety of disciplines and cultural backgrounds who has an interest in working with community members.

In this regard, MACC recently provided the opportunity for 2 grade seven classrooms from a local school to work with the artist Shirley Wiebe who is working on the Stanley Park Environmental Art Project. This project was born out of a desire to respond creatively to the windstorm that devastated the park on December 15, 2006. http://vancouver.ca/parks/arts/spea/overview.htm

COZY is an ephemeral art-piece created in a collaborative effort by community members. The artist has been workshopping this project acroos Vancouver, for the past 6 months working with a diverse range of ages, neighbourhoods and cultural backgrounds. She is leading them in constructing a fitted cozy for a storm aflicted tree stump. Her goal is to have COZY completed and installed onto the site specific stump, by July 30, 2009.
